Course summary
Some pupils seem impossible to teach. They may have social, emotional and behavioural difficulties; may be de-motivated and disengaged from learning; may be withdrawn and uncommunicative; may already be diagnosed with a special educational need such as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.) or they may be refugees from a different country and culture.
This course will look at understanding these learners’ needs better and ways to include them in classrooms.
Topics covered will include
- What is a difficult learner and why do we find them difficult?
- Early attachment patterns, and their relevance to learning
- Psychological theories which can help teachers: attachment theory, play theory, effect of environment on learning and behaviour
- Social inclusion: the effects of deprivation, trauma and loss on learning
- The effects of family crises on learning; domestic violence; abuse and neglect; parental addiction and/or mental illness
- Including children who are in foster care
- Motivating the de-motivated: unlocking learning blocks and limiting beliefs
- Dealing with conflict and communicating effectively
- Recognizing and celebrating diversity
- Behaviour Management and Behaviour Change techniques
- Developing different ways of assessing pupils so that they remain motivated
- Including refugee and displaced children
- Working with parents/carers and the local community
- Practical classroom activities which address pupils’ needs
