About the course

Many students carry invisible burdens into the classroom. This course equips educators to recognise the signs of trauma, understand its impact on behaviour and learning, and respond with strategies that heal rather than harm. Trauma-informed teaching benefits every student — not just those with identified needs.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding Trauma and Its Effects – Recognise how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) shape student behaviour, attention, memory and emotional regulation.
  • Creating Psychological Safety – Design predictable, calm classroom routines and physical environments that signal safety to the nervous system.
  • Trauma-Sensitive Responses – Replace punitive reactions with regulated, compassionate responses that de-escalate rather than retraumatise.
  • Building Resilience – Use strengths-based approaches to foster self-regulation, optimism and a growth mindset in students who have experienced adversity.
  • Educator Self-Care – Protect your own wellbeing through vicarious trauma awareness and sustainable professional practice.
